WebPersonally, I wandered into New Londo Ruins first in Dark Souls and almost rage quit, not realizing there were two other directions that one could go (three with the Key). Several playthroughs, I have gone into the Catacombs first thing to get the Great Scythe. With patience, caution, and a blunt weapon, the Catacombs are manageable.

For me in PVE it feels ok and kills pretty quick, only imo it's a bit difficult to use in pvp against hyper armor and magic users. Big range but medium speed is just to slow to punish people. #1.

Also keep your fire longsword. It is useful against certain enemies (cathedral of the deep) that are vulnerable to fire.
